Liquid Bombers Guilty: But is it Justice?

Waheed Zaman, Ibrahim Savant and Arafat Waheed Khan Guilty after a third trial but were acquitted in the first and second ‘liquid bomb plot’ trials.

UK – Ibrahim Savant, Arafat Khan and Waheed Zaman were convicted by a jury at Woolwich Crown Court.

The three men were among eight tried in connection with an ‘al Qaida’-inspired plot to detonate homemade liquid bombs on transatlantic jets.

So we have had yet another show trial, and no doubt we would have had yet another and another and so on until the government got the result it wants.

This is the third attempt to get a guilty verdict against these men, after two previous juries failed to find them guilty of the same charges.

This is why we used to have laws against malicious prosecution. To protect the vulnerable from the law. Take an unpopular defendant, an alleged Paedophile, Rapist, Right wing politician or Terrorist. Then keep trying them until you get a guilty verdict.

But I hear you say Liquid Bombs do work, the Jury was shown a film of a TARP (Liquid Bomb) explosion. TARP, or triacetone triperoxide, a high explosive that supposedly can be made from common household chemicals unlikely to be caught by airport screeners. A little hair dye, drain cleaner, and paint thinner – all easily concealed in drinks bottles – and the forces of evil have effectively smuggled a deadly bomb onboard your plane.

Yes and the TARP bomb was assembled in a lab under ideal conditions, not just injecting the fuel into the oxidiser. Uuh I hear you say, it has the same effect.

But NO. This is displaying you ignorance about organic chemistry. Organic chemistry is not like inorganic chemistry where x + y = z. Organic chemistry is all about the balancing of reversible chemical reactions to produce the greatest yeald of the chemical you are making. In the case of TARP bombs, the reacting mixture needs to be kept very cold in order for the reaction to yeald a efficient reaction

In the case of a TARP bomb just injecting the fuel into the oxidiser as the prosecution alleges, would result in an uncontrolled reaction of very low efficiency. The temperature would rise rapidly resulting in a minor explosion, unlikely to even pop a window on a plane unless it was in a confined space for instance the toilet. Ultimately the power of explosion would be limited by the strength of the container it was confined in. A plastic pop bottle that had been punctured by a hypodermic needle would burst at an even lower pressure.

So expect the Appeals to start coming in thick and fast.
