Afghanistan – Yesterday the US corporate puppet of a Prime minister David Cameron got on his trotters and went to visit the troops in Afghanistan. Whilst he was there he uttered the now infamous words of US President George W. Bush about the Iraq war, “Mission accomplished.”
Prey tell us Mr Cameron what exactly was that mission? Giving meaning to the deaths of those who have already died for this mission? Making the streets of Britain safer? Civilising the natives? Bringing an end to Opium production in Afghanistan? Upholding International Law? Holding up a fig leaf to cover US War Crimes? Building a Gas pipeline for a US Oil company? Let us examine these individually.
Giving meaning to the deaths of those who have already died for this mission?
No. This is not a reason to be there. It is simply a dishonest appeal to British Patriotism and an attempt to stop difficult questions being asked. My Country right or wrong. It is called Jingoism. The last refuge of the scoundrel.
Making the streets of Britain safer?
No. Ask the family of Lee Rigby. An off duty, British Army soldier, Drummer (Private) Lee Rigby of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was attacked and killed by two men near the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, south east London, in what has been described as an Islamic terrorist attack.
His attackers told passers-by that they had killed a soldier to avenge the killing of Muslims by the British armed forces. Simple cause and effect. A direct link to the Afghanistan war.
Civilising the natives?
No. The Afghans are already civilised. It is just that their civilisation is different to our civilisation. If you were to hold a referendum tomorrow, the Afghans would reject western civilisation by a huge majority.
Western civilisation is seen as utterly corrupt in comparison.
Bringing an end to Opium production in Afghanistan?
No. The Taliban actually stopped opium production in Afghanistan. Since the US occupation of Afghanistan, Opium production has taken off again.
The US made strategic alliances with the drug producing war lords in order to overthrow the Taliban. There are percipient rumours that NATO assets are used to ship heroin across Afghanistan for export to drug dealers in Russia
Upholding International Law?
No. The whole enterprise was illegal and still is. Invading a country, committing war crimes, putting your puppet in power and inviting yourself to stay is not legal.
Holding up a fig leaf to cover US War Crimes?
No. Utterly failed because the US has its own agenda, and it is not in the slightest bit interested in listening to a word anyone else said.
A wise person would have reminded the Americans that whilst it is generally easy to overturn an Islamic leader. It is almost impossible to successfully occupy that state.
Building a Gas pipeline for a US Oil company?
Well Yes and No. The Americans want to build a gas pipeline called the TAPI Turkmenistan – Afghanistan – Pakistan – India Pipeline through Afghanistan because it bypasses both Iran and Russia.
So far it is the most expensive pipeline in history. On top of its $ 7.6 billion dollar price tag you have to add the cost of the Afghanistan war and occupation. This takes the total to a staggering $ 2 trillion dollars. That is just the cost to the US then there is the combined cost to the US’s NATO allies. this may amount to another [char]euro[/char]trillion.
Is this pipeline built? No and it is more serious trouble because the Iranians have an alternative gas pipeline called the IPI Iran – Pakistan – India which is due to be finished in 2014. Three years before the projected finish of the TAPI pipeline.
Once the INI gas pipeline is operational US financial sanctions against Iran are finished. Jam or rather Gas today speaks rather louder than Gas tomorrow.
So now you know why not a single one of the Afghanistan policy objectives have been accomplished. It has been a colossal waste of Time money and more importantly lives.
It also explains why the US is talking to right Iran now.
