I can’t say I was that mournful about the death of Cilla Black the weekend before last, I never found her entertaining what-so-ever! I actually found Cilla’s manner patronising & cringeworthy & I always knew that beaming frigging smile of hers hid the likelihood she was a scornful bitch in private, oh & lets not forget that she was a Thatcherite supporting friend of Jimmy Savile, so as you might tell I don’t buy into the whole hype that she was a National treasure as so many others consider her being.
It’s not just I don’t get Cilla Black being entertaining or some kind of national treasure, every Xmas there’s always that one night when the BBC devote a night to endless reruns of the Morecambe & Wise Show & every contemporary entertainer commentating on how frigging brilliant the pair were & I’m at a complete loss because I’ve never found Morecambe & Wise at all amusing nor entertaining. Over half the nation might have watched their Christmas Specials back in the 1970s, but me I just don’t get the appeal of Morecambe & Wise & considering the reverence that there still appears to be for Morecambe & Wise, I’ve often asked myself is there something mentally wrong with me for not getting why Morecambe & Wise might have so great etc, do I need therapy because I don’t get Morecombe & Wise?
It’s not as if my idea of entertainment begins with Lenny Bruce and ends with Doug Stanhope, it’s not as if I dislike ‘light entertainment’ because I loved Basil Brush, The Muppets, Keith Harris (who of course sadly died recently) and Orville, The Wombles, the anarchic Late Late Breakfast Show, Challenge Aneka, It’s A Knockout minus Stuart Hall being a child molester who should have got a far longer prison sentence for his crime then he did.
Okay cultural taste is something which is very subjective and my tastes are by and large what are considered edgy and alternative, but sometimes the way peeps laud various entertainers who I just don’t find entertaining such as Morecambe and Wise as supposed ‘national treasures’, I’m left wondering is there something wrong with me for not getting them in the same light as others and viewing them as ‘national treasures’.
