Turkey – Whilst we have all been looking the other way it appears that Daesh (IS) has taken over Turkey. The most shocking part is that fact that the takeover took place without a fight!
This is particularly worrying because the US stores some 50 to 90 type B61 nuclear weapons at the Incirlik air base under the Nuclear Sharing doctrine.
Nuclear Sharing is a concept in NATO’s policy of nuclear deterrence, which involves member countries without nuclear weapons of their own in the planning for the use of nuclear weapons by NATO, and in particular provides for the armed forces of these countries to be involved in delivering these weapons in the event of their use.
The takeover was heralded by the seizure by Government administrators of Zaman, the country’s largest newspaper, on Friday night following a court order and police have fired rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the ensuing protests in Istanbul. The clashes are ongoing.
Zaman is the bestselling newspaper of Turkey. Up until the government seizure of the newspaper, the police were raiding the place daily.
It is also reported that nearly 2000 people have been charged with insulting the Calif and that any opposition journalists are
Long live the new Calif
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is now living his dream. He is now the Calif of the New Ottoman Empire. Turkey’s Grey Wolves, Daesh or IS, are currently raising mayhem in neighbouring Syria and Iraq. But their influence is being felt in the former Soviet republics and with the Uyghur in China.
Robert Fisk has reported in the Independent that Syrian intelligence told him that they had intercepted radio transmissions by Uyghurs fighting for Daesh.
No doubt the Calif hopes that they will reprise the performance when they return home when their current contract expires. A dangerous game to play. The Chinese are not noted for forgiving or forgetting. Face is everything for the Eastern man.
Now the USA and NATO are going to have to decide how to deal with this new reality. So will the EU because this is going to have a significantly detrimental effect on Turkey’s fitness to join the EU.
The next year should prove interesting. Remember that, “May you live in interesting times!” is a chinese curse.
