Snow and Safety

Okay some people are going to say isn’t ranting about the snow as it’s all melted? Firstly we are still only in mid January and statistically the coldest time of year in Britain is the beginning of February and so there’s a possibility of there being more snow falling over Britain as it did last year. Secondly it snowed last year and it snowed this year and its likely it will snow again sometime and so let this piece of writing be a marker of the government incompetence to deal with the snowy condition and the other nanny state garbage which resulted from the snowy conditions.
Anytime there’s an unexpected crisis such as the fuel crisis of a decade ago or the recent heavy snow, the government is slow to react and when government eventually reacts often reacts in an incompetent manner, yet when there’s any kind of terrorist attacks the government often reacts in a swift and competent manner; hmm its as if the government knows when there’s going to be a terrorist attack! Oh and then there’s the government’s overall answer to severe weather conditions by blaming global warming and saying we all must be taxed for it.
During the heavy snow that fell upon Britain an important curling competition in Stirling was cancelled, I don’t know much about curling other then its incredibly boring to watch & that the one thing you need to play curling is ice. Well just over a week ago there was plenty of ice about and it was excuse used to cancel or postpone many sporting fixtures. Like I say one of the few things I know about curling is that you need a load of ice to play it and though there was a load of ice, like many sporting events the authorities called the event off because there were worries concerning public safety with those travelling to various sporting events.
For me the curling being called off is not for me the most ironic thing to happen regards to the snow and sporting events being called off. The most ironic sporting event to be called off during the recent snowy conditions was the Liverpool verses Spurs soccer match. Though there was no problem with Liverpool’s home ground Anfield, the pitch was playable and the terraces were ice free, the game was called off because the authorities deemed the roads surrounding Anfield were treacherous and yet the day the game was meant to go ahead Liverpool’s club shop situated next door to Anfield was open and doing a roaring trade. The irony didn’t even elude the statist propaganda machine known as the BBC who in a report on the adverse weather conditions made the observation that though the roads surrounding Anfield were to treacherous to travel to watch a football match but not to shop at the club store next door.
But for me overall the most ironic thing concerning the recent weather conditions wasn’t it being blamed on global warming, it was the whole deal with school closures. Last February when there was heavy snow I remember parents whining that the government wasn’t doing enough to ensure schools were able to open and its been the same this year. Well parents of Britain the reason there are school closures when there’s snow is because if one of your little brats slips over whilst on school grounds your likely to sue the teachers, school or local education authority. Its ironic that say because the school is closed due to snow parents decide to take their kids sledging and etc…then its generally viewed at their own risk of injury.
Oh and for all those who drowned because they walked on frozen lakes and fell thorough the ice I don’t shed a tear, in fact I think anybody who attempted to walk across a frozen lake or pond and drowned in the process was an idiot because there were plenty of news reports warning the ice wasn’t thick enough to walk on.
There were plenty people old enough to remember the Britain’s worse winter of 1962/63 when it started to snow on Boxing Day and it didn’t stop until March, back then according to those who remember, nobody sue'd if they slipped over and injured themselves, there were no school closures and football matches were only postponed if the pitch was frozen. Even back in the 70s and early 80s when it snowed more often I remember if were a boarding school you were sent on a cross country run in 10 feet of snow. Its bewildering how folk in Canada and Scandinavia manage to live with artic conditions every winter when in modern Britain two flakes of snow brings the whole country to a halt. In other words there’s plenty of people who adapt to living in more extreme weather conditions why can’t modern Britain when Britain just under 50 years ago was able to.
Hey the next time there’s snow count on it that the government won’t have enough salt to grit the roads, but next time there’s a terrorist attack count on it that the government will have enough body bags.
